3 Placenta Traditions to honor your placenta

The placenta is an incredible organ that your body develops specifically for your baby! It acts like a pair of lungs, a heart, and kidneys for your baby while you are pregnant, filtering toxins away and sending nutrients to your little one. Some families feel that because of the special functions of the placenta, that it should be honored with  placenta traditions.

1. Placenta Encapsulation And Placenta Tinctures

One way that you can honor your placenta is to hire a placenta arts specialist to safely process your placenta into encapsulated placenta pills or a placenta tincture.  There are several potential benefits to taking encapsulated placenta pills like increased breastmilk supply, a faster postpartum recovery, and more. I have had several doula clients who have said they felt their placenta pills made a world of a difference in their recovery after birth! 2. Placenta Artwork

One of the most beautiful placenta traditions you could use is to turn your placenta into artwork. You can hire a placenta arts specialist to print your placenta’s tree of life pattern onto a canvas. You can also dehydrate the umbilical cord still attached to the placenta into a heart shape for a keepsake. I would be sure to keep any placenta artwork in a safe, humidity-free environment.

3. Burying Your Placenta

The most common placenta tradition that my doula families have chosen if they do not plan to process their placenta into placenta pills or a placenta tincture is to bury their placenta along with a special tree or bush. The plants thrive with the boost of nutrients from the placenta. You can also take photos of your baby next to their special tree each year to show how they have both grown.
Worried you may move away or live in an apartment without access to a garden or yard? You can plant your placenta with a tree in a very large potted planter and keep the plant in a sunny place on your patio/porch.
